A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” declared the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
